You're offering me over 10,000 smileys for free? C'mon, there's got to be a catch.

Actually, there isn't. We do understand, however, why you may be skeptical and think Smiley Central is just too good to be true. Especially considering all the rather unbelievable offers floating around the Internet. So let us put your mind at ease and explain how we make money - without charging you a cent.

When you download Smiley Central, you get a toolbar installed on your browser. This is how you add smileys - by clicking on the toolbar's Smiley Central button. As you've no doubt already noticed, the toolbar also offers you other great benefits, including a search tool that is powered by the Internet's leading search engines. When you search the Web via your toolbar and click on any of the highly relevant sponsored search listings, we make money. It's as easy as that.

For that reason, we encourage you to do all your Internet searches using your toolbar. It's convenient (because it's on your browser, you can search from anywhere), and you simply won't find a more powerful search tool. Enjoy!

Adding Smileys to Messages

How do I add a smiley to my Instant Message?

To add a smiley to your instant message, click the Smiley Central button located in the top-right corner of the Windows client version of your AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. Choose the smiley you'd like to use from the dropdown menu.

After clicking on a smiley icon within your Smiley application, you will see something like this in your compose box: @[smiley: Hi Ya : [15/15_1_70]]

This is code that tells your IM client to display your smiley as an icon once you click Send. Go ahead and try it. Send your message and the code will convert to the smiley icon that you and your friend will be able to see.

IMPORTANT: If your friend does not yet have Smiley Central, he/she will see the smiley code rather than the icon. Your buddy will need to download Smiley Central in order to see the icon. From time to time, we include a brief message and a link to Smiley Central when your friend receives a message from you in which you have attempted to insert a smiley.

Yes! How many Custom Smileys can I save?

You may save up to 10 Custom Smileys. Should you try to save more than that, the saved smiley that hasn't been used for the longest period of time will automatically be removed to make room for the newest one.

Please note: Custom Smileys are saved locally on your computer. If you access Smiley Central from a different computer, you will not have access to your Custom Smileys.

Can I remove the light-gray "User Created" text below my Custom Smiley?

No, the "User Created" text is added to all Custom Smileys in order to differentiate the smileys our team designs from those created by our users.  We have made the text very subtle so as not to distract from the smiley, itself.

Are there any characters or keys that won't work with Custom Smileys?

You cannot insert a colon ":" or a tilde "~" or a back-slash "\" into your Custom Smiley message, and some users may be unable to use their "Delete" key. (If you experience this, just use your keyboard's backspace key, instead.)

Is the toolbar spyware?

NO! Your toolbar does not collect any personal information and is completely “spyware”-free and “adware”-free.  Period.  In fact, we are proud to have recently been deemed "spyware safe" by the Aluria Spyware Safe program.

The toolbar was specifically designed to provide a great user experience free of spyware, adware, direct marketing, data collection or other similar activities. In order to achieve that goal:

  • The toolbar software DOES NOT collect personal information of any kind, period. No email address, registration or other information is required to use the product. No zip code, no email, no member name, no password. Unlike many other products, we do not even attempt to collect data upon startup as a requirement of use.

  • The toolbar software DOES NOT monitor the websites visited by the end user, collect or in any manner report any information about what sites an end users visits (or any clickstream activity), nor does it monitor or scrape information when you are on other sites.

  • The toolbar software DOES NOT serve or facilitate so-called "contextual advertising" where pop-up ads are served based on the sites you visit. Many applications are identified as spyware because they monitor end-user Internet usage and serve contextual pop-ups. The toolbar does not engage in any such practices.

In short, your toolbar provides a superior search experience on an ANONYMOUS basis and without any additional monitoring, contextual ads or other nuisances.

What does the "Auto Close" button do?

The "Auto Close" button allows your Smiley Central dropdown window to automatically close after you've added a single smiley to your email message. Click the checkbox next to the Auto-close button within your Smiley Central window to enable this feature. (If you plan to add more than one smiley to most of your email messages, you may not want to take advantage of this feature.)
